Travelers Then & Now
Air travel was once a glamorous experience that transported travelers immersed in luxury. Fast forward to flying economy today and it's a complete 180-degree change — and oftentimes, a struggle to get through without noise-canceling headphones.
Reclining in Luxury
Airlines in the 1950s designed seats for comfort and relaxation, even in economy class. It was just like lounging at home with cushioned, fully reclining seats and curtained windows. There were also extra luxury touches, like full-size pillows, cup holders, and refreshing beverages. The pilot even checked in on passengers' reading habits. "Why yes, ma'am, I enjoyed that article, too!"
Designed for Pretzels
This enterprising passenger has cracked the code that today’s economy-class travelers need to be contortionists to fit in those cramped seats. The reclining feature is more of an illusion than a reality, and the limited overhead space is made for the vertically challenged. But at least a family trip brings everyone closer — literally.
Va-Va-Va-Voom!
Micro mini-skirts, go-go boots, and bright colors were all the rage during the early 1970s. Uniforms for stewardesses (as they were known then) embraced that sexy, flirty, fun style. Matching bags and purely decorative mini-caps set the ensemble off. It was a “fly the friendly skies” kind of vibe. Who knew what your job was? Wait. The cap — oh yeah.
